Just too good to be true! About Tasmania Tasmania is an island state of Australia, 240 km south of the mainland, east to west is approximately 315 km wide and 286 km long north to south. With outlying islands, has 5,400 km of coastline and an area of 68,331 sq km enjoyed by it's population of 480,000 persons. At a latitude of 41-43 degrees South, it has a cool, temperate climate, but it's coastal areas, inland plains, and mountainous terrains produce many different micro-climates supporting a myriad of bio-diverse enclaves. It has many inland lakes, rivers and streams, temperate rainfall forests and highland plateaus, some areas of which have yet to be walked by man. Our marine boundaries, Bass Strait to the north, the Great Southern Ocean to the west, the Pacific's Tasman Sea to the east, and to the south the Antarctic Ocean. These natural barriers give us the necessary isolation to exclude most pests and diseases of primary produce. Our State Government also responsibly guards our Island's agricultural and fisheries industries from imported natural and man-made contaminants. Tasmania's principle industries include agriculture, fisheries, forestry, tourism, mining, and ship building. These developments have been carefully monitored so as not to sully the deep fertile soils, pristine air and pure water which contribute to our envious environment. The State enjoys pure air from the prevailing westerly air stream known as the Roaring Forties and this air travels over thousands of kilometres of ocean before it reaches land. In the far west of the state, at a place forebodingly named Cape Grim, there is an air monitoring station operated jointly by the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation and the Bureau of Meteorology. This air is amongst the cleanest and purest in the world; it is used as a benchmark for world environmental air monitoring. Tasmania is renowned for it's premium dairy produce, fine wines, fresh seafood and succulent fruit. Olive products are now entering this quality produce arena.
